Summer Cyberhigh Program

August 16, 2012 in All Events, Past Events, Summer Programs

This summer there were 31 students in Cyber High. Out of 31 students, 25 completed their course completely, 4 took 2 or more exams, and unfortunately 3 students took no exams (1 student got discouraged and only came the 1st week). In terms of grades there were 9 A’s, 5 B’s, 9C’s, 2 D’s, and no F’s! 4 students even completed 2 courses. Of the students who completed a course, 11 students made up F’s, 6 students made up D’s, and 7 students took the course for the first time. In total 33 courses were attempted and 164 exams were passed and our ADA for the month was 23 students per day. Overall Cyber High this summer ran smoothly and was full of hardworking students!

Summer Sports Program

August 16, 2012 in All Events, Past Events, Summer Programs

In the month of June we launched our 3rd Annual Beacon Summer Sports program here at Burton High School. This summer we are providing cheer leading and football training to our Burton youth.  Our football program recently visited the UC Berkeley football facility where they talked to coaches and players on how to become better student athletes.  Our cheer leading program has also attended cheer camp at UC Santa Cruz where they will be for a week with coaches and team mates. In addition, we have had guest speakers who have talked to the youth about life skills and how to be a team. Overall the program services on average 30 youth 3 times a week. This program will help our Burton sports program become more team oriented, physically fit, and prepared for the school season.

Summer Tech Internship Week 1

June 8, 2012 in All Events, Past Events, Summer Programs

The summer tech internship is off to a great start! 17 students from 3 schools enrolled in our program. Besides expressing strong interest in learning about technology, they also expressed strong interest in using the skills they will be learning to help their community, promote Bayview Beacon Center programs, and increase the awareness of issues such as broadband awareness and internet safety that are required by our funders Broadband USA and San Francisco Department of Technology.

More importantly, they shared some great ideas about some projects they would do to find out about problems facing our community, educating others in what they find out, and proposing solutions to address the problems.

To support our interns, Bayview Beacon Center is providing free training in how to find and use resources around them to do their work, tools to do them with, and mentors to help them. In addition, we are providing financial assistance to some interns who will have more responsibilities in their specific areas of interest.

Meet our new Mac and PC Interns!

Tayron Biddle and Susana Wong will help Bayview Beacon set up the computers in the new lab, maintain the computers, and help the students use the computers. Tayron wants to help kids learn about computers, and Susana has ideas to get other people to help out in the computer lab, or she writes, she will come early and stay late to it herself.

Met our new Social Media and Mass Media Interns!

Brieanna and Donna will help other interns communicate/broadcast their messages using social/mass media. One of idea to attach a website to the school loop, and Donna has an idea to create infographics to make information more appealing to people in advertisements, videos, blogs and social media.

Meet our new Internet Safety and Broadband Awareness Interns!

Justin and Rukhsar will help increase awareness about internet safety and broadband opportunities in the community. Justin’s idea is to find out more about the problem by talking to people, and then to work with other groups to add an internet safety component to their programs. Rukhsar’s ideas are to promote the free programs offered by Bayview Beacon Center, and to make a documentary or video about adults.

Meet our new Multicultural and Family/Adults Public Relations Intern!

Kayla and Cristina will help increase awareness of multicultural issues and engage families and adults by giving them a positive image of Burton and Beacon. Kayla would like to outreach to the communities by handing our flyers and getting feedback about how cultural divide is affecting them. Cristina’s ideas to engage families and adults are to get her parents to help her, to organize events for families to meet and reflect, and then to make videos to share stories about different families.

Meet our new Business, Community Service and Volunteering Public Relations Interns!

Prince and Luis will help engage businesses and students about community service and volunteering by giving them a positive image of Burton and Beacon. Prince would like to do projects that catch the attention of businesses like doing community service in their areas. Luis, who does a lot of volunteering work, has many ideas how to spread the word why it is important to do community service.

Meet our other other interns!

Alvin, Angelica, Brenda, Christian, Emily, Kimberly S. and Kimberly V. will play a very important role in helping all the groups assess, design and develop their ideas into implementable items. They have a diverse interests and ideas, will learn about diverse technology, and will have an opportunity to apply their new skills in diverse fields and projects to help more people.

Bayview Beacon Center is very excited to help all our interns learn about the necessary tools and best practices needed to assess problems, and transform their ideas into solutions.
